Newborn photography sessions are a wonderful way to capture the first few weeks of a baby’s life, but it can be challenging to create unique and captivating images. One of the best ways to add interest and variety to a newborn photoshoot is by incorporating props. Props not only provide visual interest but also add texture, colour, and depth to the images.
As a professional newborn photographer on the Gold Coast, I have found that there are a few key props that I use in every session to create stunning and memorable images. In this blog, I will share with you the top five props that I love to use and how they can enhance your newborn photo shoot.
When it comes to props, I have a few go-to items but these are my absolute favourites. These props not only enhance the photos but also provide comfort and safety for your baby.
1) Soft and fluffy blankets
My first favourite prop to use is a soft and fluffy white blanket. I use it as a base for the baby to lie on and wrap them in for those classic swaddled shots. The soft texture of the blanket also adds a beautiful depth and texture to the images.
2) Lace headbands or beanies
A simple but effective prop that I use in every session is a headband or a beanie. These are perfect for adding texture to the images while also keeping the baby warm and comfortable. I always make sure to use soft, stretchy materials that won’t irritate the baby’s delicate skin. You would be surprised what a difference the addition of a knitted beanie, fuzzy teddy bear ears or a flower crown can make to your photo. It levels up the adorableness.
3) Lace Shawls and Wraps
A versatile prop that I love to use in my sessions is a wrap. Wraps can be used in so many different ways, from swaddling the baby to creating beautiful textures and layers in the photos. I have a variety of wraps neutral colours and textures, allowing me to create a unique look for each session. However, you are welcome to bring your own.
4) Woven Baskets
Another must-have newborn photography prop for me is a woven basket in different shapes and sizes. This provides a safe and snug space for the baby to curl up in, adding an adorable touch to the photos. I often add some extra texture to the basket by layering it with a soft blanket, faux fur or a beautiful lightweight hand-crocheted baby shawl.
5) Wooden Props
Last, but certainly not least is the wooden props such as a heart bowl or bucket where all of the photography props listed above can be used to create the most gorgeous newborn photos that will melt even the hardest of hearts. I recently used this in a photo shoot in my Ormeau Hills studio for Baby Amelia You can see photos of Amelia’s newborn photography session here.
Additionally, you can include baby-safe soft toys, bean bags or cane chairs as they are perfect for adding a touch of personality or whimsy to the photos and can also help to soothe the baby.
As a newborn photographer, using props in my sessions helps me to create unique and timeless images that your family will treasure for a lifetime. It’s these little touches that make all the difference in capturing the beauty of these precious moments.
